Damper Types: Choosing The Damper

Dec 08, 2020

Damping itself means resistance. It is one of the phenomena that objects are subjected to various frictional resistances in motion, and the energy is gradually dissipated and the motion is weakened. The devices installed with these exceptional damping components can provide motion resistance and consume motion energy. Together with which call dampers.

From the power resources, dampers are mainly classified into three types: liquid dampers, gas dampers, electromagnetic dampers.

Type 1:Rotary Damper

The common liquid dampers are dashpot, which is more mature in their applications. A dashpot is a passive velocity-dependent damper. Its force is generated by the interaction of the inner sealed viscous medium and structural components of the damper. Our common rotary dampers and linear dampers are viscous dashpot dampers.

Type 2: Linear Damper

A linear damper is established to a force opposite to the translational movement. Linear Damper is usually specified by strokes (amount of linear displacement) and damping coefficient (force per speed).

Type 3: Gas spring dampers

The gas damper is normally combined with a damper with gas inside and spring together called a gas spring damper. Gas spring dampers are usually called gas struts, rams, or dampers (gas struts, rams, or dampers). As the name suggests, the gas damper is a multi-functional hydro-pneumatic (contains both gas and liquid) components. It can help people to increase, lower, and support heavy or bulky objects more easily.

Eddy current damper (electromagnetic force damper)

A less frequent type of damper is an eddy current damper, which uses a large magnet inside a tube composed of a non-magnetic but conductive material, such as aluminum or copper. Like ordinary viscous dampers, the force created by eddy current dampers is proportionate to speed.

In terms of engineering mechanics, dampers are types into tune mass damper and damper with the flow.

Type 4:Taibei 101 tune mass damper

A tuned mass damper is a device installed in a structure to prevent discomfort, damage, or structural failure caused by this vibration. The purpose of installing tuned mass dampers is mainly to reduce earthquake amplitude. The picture as showed in the picture of Taipei 101 Tower (taibei101 Tower) uses a tuned mass damper.

Type 5:Stockbridge Damper hanging on Cable Lines

Another commonly tuned mass damper is utilized for slender structures to suppress wind-induced vibration. Since the design method was invented by the engineer Edison Southern California in 1920, this kind of structure is named the Stockbridge Damper. For example, power lines being placed on air. Highway signs and cable-stayed bridges are choosing this principle. Generally, two masses, such as dumbbells, are placed at the end of the cable or flexible rod and clamped to the main cable in the middle.

Type 6:Damper with Flow

The damper (flow) is a kind of damper. It mechanical device uses in pipes or chimneys to adjust airflow. More specifically, it is a valve or plate employed to stop or organize the flow of air in ducts, chimneys, variable air volume (VAV) boxes, air handlers, or other air handling equipment. The damper can be used to cut off the central air conditioning (heating or cooling) of an unused room, or the damper can be adjusted to achieve room-by-room temperature and climate control. Its operation can be manual or automatic.

In short, we have been talking about many different types of dampers. The main purpose of dampers goes to slow down motion and vibration or eliminate energy.
